5th Dimension

Billy Davis, Jr., Ron Townson, and LaMonte McLemore each grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, but decided to form a musical group after getting together in Los Angeles, California.

A photographer, as well as a singer, LaMonte met Marilyn McCoo while photographing her during a beauty pagent. McCoo joined the group. At the same pagent, the next year, McLemore met Florence LaRue and she too joined the group.

In 1966, Johnny Rivers signed the group to his new Soul City Records labels and produced their first recordings. He also changed the name of the group to the Fifth Dimension.

The group's second single, "Go Where You Wanna Go," was their first hit. It reached number 16 in the Billboard charts in 1967.

The group's recording of Jimmy Webb's "Up, Up, and Away," released in February of 1967 became their first top 10 hit.
