Robert Steven Belew was born on December 23, 1949, in Covington, Kentucky.
Belew changed his first name to Adrian in 1975 when he joined a Nashville, Tennessee, cover band. Frank Zappa saw the band in 1977 and invited Belew to audition as a guitarist for Zappa's upcoming tour. Belew got the job. David Bowie saw a performance during Zappa's tour and invited Belew to join Bowie's touring band after the Zappa tour ended. Belew toured with Bowie and appeared on Bowie's 1978 live recording of the tour show and his 1979 studio album, Lodger.
Belew played guitar for the Talking Heads 1980 release Remain in Light then toured with the group in support of the album.
Belew's debut solo album, Lone Rhino was released in 1982. Shortly afterwards. Belew joined the new incarnation of King Crimson.
After Crimson, Belew recorded a couple more solo albums and did session work. He was a member of a new group called the Bears in the late 1980s and produced their two albums.
In 1990, Belew was the musical director for David Bowie's "Sound and Vision" tour. In the 1990s, Belew recorded several new solo albums and appeared on recordings by Nine Inch Nails and others.
