Al Jolson

Asa Yoelson was born on May 26, 1886, in Seredzius, Lithuania. He died on October 23, 1950.

Jolson's family moved to the US when he was a child. Jolson first sang in a synagogue then ran away from home to join a circus. He then became a Vaudeville singer - performing in black face.

In 1926, Jolson performed three songs for an experimental short film with sound. In 1927, he starred in The Jazz Singer, the first "talkie" film. His second film, The Singing Fool was released in 1928 and became the highest grossing film up to that time.

Jolson sang the songs for the 1946 film bio The Jolson Story.
