| Arthur William Matthew Carney was born on November 4, 1918, in Mount Vernon, New York. He died on November 9, 2003.
In 1937, Carney toured with Horace Heidt's dance band, performing novelty songs.
Carney was drafted into the Army in 1944 and wounded during the D-Day landing at Normandy.
After the war, Carney appeared on radio and, in 1948, on TV in "The Morey Amsterdam Show." The next year he joined the cast of "Cavalcade of Stars" where he first played "Ed Norton" opposite Jackie Gleason's "Ralph Kramden."
Carney played "Ed Norton" in "The Honeymooners" which aired in various forms from 1951 to 1956 (and then briefly again in 1971).
After "The Honeymooners," Carney's career took a downturn until 1974 when he was cast in Paul Mazurksy's "Harry and Tonto." Carney's portrayal of a widower who travels from New York to Chicago with his pet cat won him an Oscar.
Carney's last film appearance was in 1993's Last Action Hero. Visitor Comments: |
