Walters attended public schools in New York and Miami and then attended Sarah Lawrence College in . After graduation in 1953, she moved to New York, New York to pursue a television career.
Hired as a writer by "Today Show" host, Dave Garaway, Walters soon began appearing on-screen interviewing celebrities.
In 1976, Walters became the first woman host of a prime-time newscast when ABC hired her away from NBC.
