Barry Humphries was born on February 17, 1934, in Melbourne, Australia.
Humphries performed in univeristy shows, singing songs and performing comdy sketches he had written. After college, he joined the Melbourne Theatre Company. In 1956, he created the character of Mrs. Edna Everage, a Melbourne housewife. Mrs. Everage is better known now as the "internationally celebrated Megastar," Dame Edna.
In the 1960s, Humphries appeared in numerous stage productions in London including "Oliver!" He also appeared on stage and on radio with Spike Milligan.
His 1969 one-man show brought the character of Dame Edna to the British stage, This lead to a short-lived BBC television series.
Dame Edna has made many more appearances on London stages from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s, the character appeared in several productions. In 2000, Humphries received a Tony award for his one-person show on Broadway.
In addition to the London performances, Humphries has made numerous theatrical tours to countries around the world.
Humphries is also the author of several books, novels, autobiographies, and plays. His autobiography won the J.R. Ackerley prize for biography in 1993. Visitor Comments:Links: |
