| Bette Midler was born on December 1, 1945, in Aiea, Hawaii.
Midler graduated from Radford High School in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1963 then majored in drama at the University of Hawaii.
After college, Midler worked in a pineapple factory before landing a small part in the 1966 movie Hawaii. Midler moved to New York and worked odd jobs before joining the chorus of Fiddler On the Roof on Broadway. Soon, she began playing the role of the eldest daughter and performed in the play for the next three year.
After Fiddler On the Roof, Middler performed at the Continental Baths, a gay club in New York. Midler peformed a Cabaret act of songs dating back to the 1940s. Her act began attracting audiences beyond the club's usual clientele. Midler was offered other jobs including regular appearances on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show."
Midler's first album, The Divine Miss M, was released in 1971. It and her second album, Bette Midler where both hits and Midler began performing concerts across the USA.
In 1979, Midler played Janis Joplin in The Rose. Midler's performance earned an Oscar nomination and two Golden Globe awards.
Midler's next movie, Divine Madness! was a film of a concert performance in Pasadena, California. It spawned a hit soundtrack album.
In the 1980s, Midler appeared in several successful films including Down And Out In Beverly Hills and Beaches. The soundtrack of Beaches included "The Wind Beneath My Wings" which reached number 1 in the US charts and won two Grammys.
