Ellis's first novel, Less Than Zero was published in 1985 while Ellis was still a student. The novel was well received by the critics and, while not a best seller, sold respectably.

Ellis's other books include The Rules of Attraction (1987), American Psycho (1991), The Informers (1994), and Glamorama (1999).
