Chris Smith

Chris Smith was born on October 12, 1879, in Charleston, South Carolina. He died on October 4, 1949, in New York, New York.

Smith travelled with a medicine show until settling down in New York City. With his partner, Elmer Bowman, Smith wrote songs for Vaudeville and appeared onstage.

In 1914, Smith wrote "Ballin' the Jack" with Jim Burris. The song was a hit and spawned a dance craze that lasted for years.
