Donna Deitch was born and raised in San Francisco, California. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a B.A. in art and received on M.F.A. in film from the University of California at Los Angeles, Graduate Program of Motion Pictures She produced and directed several experimental films before directing her first feature, Desert Hearts, in 1986.
