Francis Thomas Avallone was born on September 18, 1939, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Avalon began playing the trumpet and singing as a child. In 1952, at a party held for Al Martino, a talent scout heard Avalon playing trumpet and arranged for him to appear on Jackie Gleason's television show.

In the late 1950s, Avalon recorded for Philadelphia's Chancellor Records and appeared on "American Bandstand." He had seven top-ten hits.

In the 1960s, Avalon's recording career faded, but he began acting in films. His biggest success was in a series of films with Annette Funicello which began with "Beach Party."

Avalon scored a hit in the late 1970s with "Grease" from the 1978 film. In 1987, he reunited with Funicello in "Back to the Beach."

Avalon appeared in the film Skidoo which had a score by Harry Nilsson.
