Jerome Silberman was born on June 11, 1933, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Wilder made his film debut with a small part in 1967's Bonnie and Clyde. In 1968, he earned an Oscar nomination for playing "Leo Bloom" in Mel Brooks's The Producers.

In 1971, Wilder played "Willy Wonka" in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. He starred in Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein in 1973 and 1974.

In 1976, he starred with Richard Pryor in Silver Streak and, in 1979, played a rabbi in the Old West in The Frisco Kid.

Wilder starred in The Woman in Red and Haunted Honeymoon with his wife Gilda Radner. Radner died of cancer a few years later.

Wilder starred in his own TV sitcom, "Something Wilder," in 1994.

In 1999, Wilder was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. After undergoing chemotherapy, he has fully recovered.
