| George Bloomfield was born in 1930 in Montreal, Canada.
In the 1950s, Bloomfield acted and directed for his own theater company in Montreal. He then worked for the National Film Board as an editor and assistant director then a director of short films.
Bloomfield worked for the CBC for three years before heading to the US to direct his first feature film Jenny.
Making his next film, To Kill a Clown, Bloomfield had disagreements with the producers over the film's anti-war sentiments. Bloomfield was forced to make changes in the film and returned to Canada when production was finished.
