Nathan Birnbaum was born on January 20, 1896, in New York, New York. He died on March 9, 1996, in Los Angeles, California.
Burns began as a Vaudeville performer, but wasn't very successful until he met a young singer and dancer named Gracie Allen.
Burns and Allen became one of most popular acts in Vaudeville.
The two married in 1926 and appeared on stage, on radio, in movies, and on television. From 1950 to 1958, Burns and Allen starred on TV in "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show."
Allen retired in 1958, but Burns continued performing on television and in nightclubs. Gracie Allen died in 1964.
In the 1960s, Burns produced television shows such as "Mister Ed."
In 1975, ill-health forced Jack Benny to drop out of the film The Sunshine Boys. Burns stepped in to play the role of a retired Vaudeville comic and won an Oscar for his performance.
His career revived, Burns starred in Oh, God! in 1977. He appeared in several more films and made numerous TV appearances through 1994.
