| Glen Campbell was born on April 22, 1936, in Delight, Arkansas.
Campbell was one of a family with 12 children raised in rural Arkansas. At 16, Campbell left school to pursue music full time. He played in local bands until 1961 when he moved to Los Angeles, California, and began playing guitar in recording sessions for artists such as Frank Sinatra, the Beach Boys, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Merle Haggard, Elvis Presley, Jan and Dean, and the Righteous Brothers.
Campbell toured with the Beach Boys in 1964 and 1965. In 1967, Campbell's "Gentle On My Mind" broke into the top 40. Other hits followed including "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Wichita Lineman."
In 1968, Campbell hosted "The Summer Smothers Brothers Show" which lead to his own series, "The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour."
In 1969, Campbell had a hit with "True Grit," from the soundtrack of the movie in which he appeared. In the 1970s, the hits continued with "Rhinestone Cowboy" and "Southern Nights."
During his 40 years in show business, Campbell has released more than 70 albums. He has sold 45 million records and racked up 12 RIAA Gold albums, 4 Platinum albums and 1 Double-Platinum album. He has had 27 Top 10 hits.
In the 1990s, Campbell released a series of gospel albums and wrote an autobiography.
