| Goran Visnjic was born on September 9, 1972, in Sibenik, Yugoslavia.
Visnjic grew up in Sibenik which is now a part of Croatia. ibenik is a port town on the Adriatic Sea. After completing the required military service in the Yugoslavian army, the Balkan war broke out and Visnjic briefly served in the Croatian army. After that, he entered the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb.
Visnjic gained popularity in Croatia when cast as Hamlet in the prestigious Dubrovnik Summer Festival's staging of Shakespeare's play. Visnjic's performance earned him three national Best Actor awards, including the Croatian equivalent of a Tony.
Visnjic starred in three Croatian features, and made his American motion-picture debut in the critically acclaimed drama, Welcome to Sarajevo."
