Harry Von Tilzer

Harry Von Tilzer was born Harry Gummbinsky in 1872, in Detroit, Michigan. At age 14 he ran away from home and joined the circus. A year later, he adopted the stage name Harry Von Tilzer. (His mother's maiden name was Tilzer) when he joined a travelling burlesque troupe.

Von Tilzer wrote songs which he sold to other performers for $2.00 each. Later he started publishing his songs and formed his own publishing firm called "Harry Von Tilzer Music Company" in 1902. That year, Nora Bayes hat a hit singing his "Down Where the Wurzburger Flows".

George Gershwin's first song to be published was published by Von Tilzer's company.

Von Tizler is created with inspiring the name of "Tin Pan Alley." Von Tilzer stuffed pieces of paper between the strings of his piano to produce a tinny sort of sound which he liked. Songwriter Monroe Rosenfeld was inspired by the sound of Von Tilzer's piano and named a song "Tin Pan Alley."
