| In 1955 Cohen and Victor Maymudes opened the Unicorn Folk Club on Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles, California. The Unicorn was a coffee house with live music and poetry. Lenny Bruce performed at the club. In 1957, Cohen and Maymudes opened the Cosmo Alley where George Carlin made his comic debut.
After running into financial problems, Cohen left the US for a few years. He returned in the mid 1960s, and, with Nick Cenci, started Co & Ce Records in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
In 1966, Cohen became Frank Zappa's manager. In the late 1960s, Cohen and Zappa formed the Bizarre Records and Straight Records labels. Bizarre released mainly works by Zappa releases while Straight released albums by other artists including Tim Buckley, Captain Beefheart, and Alice Cooper.
