Holly Near was born in 1949 in Ukiah, California.
After high school, Near attended UCLA and began acting in a few TV shows and films including "The Partridge Family," "All in the Family," and Slaughterhouse-Five. She also appeared in Hair on Broadway.
Near turned her attention to music and, in 1972, formed her own record label. She released a number of solo recordings and appeared as a guest on recordings by many others including Mary Travers, Arlo Guthrie, Ronnie Gilbert, and Pete Seeger.
