Irving Berlin

Israel Baline was born on May 11, 1888, in Tyumen, Siberia, Russia. He died on September 22, 1989, in New York, New York.

Persecution of Jews in Russia persuaded Irving Berlin's father in 1893 to bring his family to New York.

Berlin's father died when the boy was 13 and Irving took on odd jobs. including as a singer in a Chinatown cafe.

Berlin's first song was published in 1907 and in 1911 he had his first big hit with "Alexander's Ragtime Band."

Berlin wrote more than 1000 songs during his long life. He created many songs that are considered classics including "White Christmas," "Always", "Puttin' On The Ritz," "God Bless America," and many, many others.

Berlin was a co-founder of ASCAP.
