Berlin's father died when the boy was 13 and Irving took on odd jobs. including as a singer in a Chinatown cafe.
Berlin's first song was published in 1907 and in 1911 he had his first big hit with "Alexander's Ragtime Band."
Berlin wrote more than 1000 songs during his long life. He created many songs that are considered classics including "White Christmas,"

"Puttin' On The Ritz,"
"God Bless America,"
and many, many others.
