| Jan Smithers was born on July 3, 1949, in Hollywood, California.
While studying at the California Institute of the Arts in 1966, Smithers was interviewed by a Newsweek and was photographed riding the back of a motorcycle. The photo was on the cover of the March 21, 1966 issue of Newsweek. The photo helped Smithers began acting in commercials which led to some TV and film roles.
In 1978, she was hired to play Bailey Quarters in CBS's "WKRP in Cincinnati." Since the show's end in 1982, Smithers has been seen in just a few TV and film roles.
