Paul Crosby was born on March 16, 1942, in Oneonta, New York. As "Jerry Jeff Walker," he formed a psychedelic folk band called Circus Maximus which released two albums on the Vanguard label.

Walker says he based his song ^"Mr. Bojangles^" on a street dancer he met. He wrote the song in 1966 and recorded it as the title track of his first solo album.
