Jimmy Buffet was born on December 25, 1946, in Pascagoula, Mississippi and raised in Mobile, Alabama. Buffet attended the University of Southern Mississippi and earned a degree in history and journalism. Buffet sang in clubs in New Orleans, Louisiana, then, in 1969, was hired as the Nashville, Tennessee, correspondent for Billboard magazine.
In 1970, Buffet signed a contract with Barnaby Records and releaed one album which did not sell well.
Buffet moved to Florida which may have inspired the beach bum persona and tropical folk-rock style he acquired. In 1972, he signed with Dunhill records. His 1973 album, A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean, received rave reviews and spawned a minor country hit ("The Great Filling Station Holdup") and a cross-over hit ("Come Monday").
More hits followed, but by the 1980s, his album sales slowed yet he played concerts to packed houses (and stadiums). Buffet has also developed a line of clothing, created a chain of clubs, and authored novels. Visitor Comments:Links: |
