| Joe Cocker was born on May 20, 1944, in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. In 1961, Cocker worked as an apprentice gas fitter by and at night sang in pubs as "Vance Arnold" of "Vance Arnold and the Avengers."
In 1962, Cocker quit his day job and released his first single, a cover of the Beatles "I'll Cry Instead." Six years later, Cocker scored his first big hit in the UK with another recording of a Beatles song - "With a Little Help From My Friends." Cocker first cracked the US top ten in 1970 with "The Letter."
