His father owned a chain of movie theaters. Barry says that he always wanted to be a film composer.
In 1960, Barry composed his first score - for the film Beat Girl.
In 1962, Barry was asked to help on the score for the first theatrical James Bond film, Dr. No.
Barry later created the scores for many other Bond films including From Russia With Love and Goldfinger.
