| J. R. Cash was born on February 26, 1932, in Kingsland, Arkansas. He died on September 12, 2003.
After high school, Cash joined the Air Force. The Air Force would not accept initials as a name, so Cash adopted "John" as his first name.
While stationed in Germany, Cash started his first band. Cash moved to Memphis, Tennessee, after he left the Air Force.
Sam Phillips of Sun Records discovered Cash and released his first singles. "Folsom Prison Blues" hit the top ten in the country charts in 1956 and "I Walk the Line" became a number one hit.
Hits continued through the 1950s and 1970s. He was less successful in the 1970s, but in 1980, Cash became the youngest living inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He also joined Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson in the group the Highwaymen.
