| Roberta Joan Anderson was born on November 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada.
In 1964 Anderson began her career playing folk music in clubs and at festivals around Canada. In 1965, she married folk-singer Chuck Mitchell and the couple moved to Detroit, Michigan. In 1967, the couple broke up and Joni moved to New York, New York.
Mitchell's success as a songwriter began when country artist George Hamilton IV recorded her song "The Urge For Going."
