| The Northridge Earthquake rocked southern California on January 17, 1994, just two days after Harry Nilsson died. Aftershocks rumbled during Harry's funeral where someone joked that the earthquake was the result of Harry getting to heaven and discovering that there is no bar there.
Guitarist Laurence Juber tells the above story as an introduction to his instrumental tribute to Nilsson called "When Harry Got to Heaven" which is on his Mosaic album.
Juber was born in 1952 in Stepney, East London, England. Juber started playing the guitar professionally when he was 13.
Laurence was a featured soloist for England's National Youth Jazz Orchestra. While attending London University, he played guitar for musicals in London's West End.
As a session player, Luber contributed to recordings by Rosemary Clooney, Alan Parsons, Paul Williams, Al Stewart, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Belinda Carlisle, and others. Juber also played the lead guitar on the soundtrack to The Spy Who Loved Me.
In 1978, Juber joined Paul McCartney's band Wings. Juber recorded and toured with the band for three years. Juber's guitar playing is featured in the Wing's hits "Goodnight Tonight" and "Coming Up." Juber won the first "Best Rock Instrumental" Grammy award for "Rockestra" from the Wings album Back to the Egg.
In 1981, McCartney disbanded Wings and Juber moved to the US and played music for TV shows such as "Happy Days," "Roseanne," "Beverly Hills 90210," "Home Improvement," "Boy Meets World," "Seventh Heaven," and "Family Ties." Juber was the featured guitarist for the TV series "Young And The Restless" for six years. Juber played on the soundtrack to the movies Dirty Dancing, Pocahontas, and Good Will Hunting.
Since 1990, Juber has released several solo albums and toured as a solo act. He has also began composing film and TV scores including the score for the syndicated live-action TV series "Tarzan." Visitor Comments:Links:Connections:Laurence Juber ... |
