| Anthony James Donegan was born on April 29, 1931, in Glasgow, Scotland.
A fan of American country, folk, and blues music, Donegan named himself Lonnie after the blues guitarist, Lonnie Johnson.
In the 1950s, Donegan joined the Chris Barber Jazz Band which released "Rock Island Line," a top 10 hit in Britan which also reached the top 20 in the US. The song inspired a number of youngsters in the UK to form "Skiffle" groups - including John Lennon.
