Lowell Mason

Lowell Mason was born on January 8, 1792, in Medfield, Massachusetts and died on August 11, 1872, in Orange, New Jersey.

Mason lived in Savannah, Georgia and was working as a bank clerk when he sold his first collection of music.

In 1833, Mason co-founded the Boston Academy of Music. He later beĀ­came the first music teacher in an American public school.

Mason composed over 1600 religious songs including "Antioch" (the melody for "Joy To the World") in 1848.
