| Lulu was born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie on November 3rd, 1948, in Lennox Castle, Lennoxtown, Glasgow.
At the age of 14, Lawrie began playing club engagements with a local group called The Gleneagles. The group performed in and around Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Lawrie was "discovered" at The Lindella Club in Glasgow discotheque by Marion Massey who became her manager.
Lawrie changed her name to Lulu and the group changed its name to The Luvvers.
Lulu and the group were signed by Decca and recorded their first single, "Shout."
Released in the spring of 1964, the single became a hit, reaching number 7 on the British charts.
In 1966, Lulu played Barbara Pegg in To Sir With Love with Sidney Poitier.
Lulu's recording of the theme song, "To Sir With Love," reached the top of the singles charts in the US.
On February 18, 1969, Lulu married Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees. The marriage lasted four years.
Lulu received the O.B.E. in June of 2000 for her contribution to the entertainment industry. She continues to record and perform.
Lulu recorded Harry Nilsson's "Without Her" (as "Without Him") in 1969. It was reelased as the b-side of her "I Am a Tiger" single which reached #9 on the UK charts. Visitor Comments:Links:Connections:Lulu ... |
