| Cass Elliot ("Mama Cass") died in Harry Nilsson's London, England apartment.
Ellen Naomi Cohen was born on September 19, 1941, in Baltimore, Maryland.
Elliot acquired an interest in acting while in high school. After high school,
she moved to New York and appeared in several productions. But, by the early 1960s,
she became more interested in music. In 1963, she became a member of a folk trio
call The Big Three who recorded two albums and appeared on The Tonight Show
and other TV programs.
After The Big Three folded, Elliot worked as a solo artist before
joining the group which became The Mamas and The Papas. From 1965
to 1968, the group recorded several top ten hits including "California Dreamin'."
In 1968, Elliot left the group to persue a solo career. In addition to achieving some
success with her records, she made a number of TV appearances including starring
in two TV specials of her own.
Shortly after finishing a two-week engagement at London's Palladium, on July 29, 1974, Elliot
suffered a heart attack and died.
Mama Cass Eliot was inducted (as a member of The Mamas and the Papas) into
