Mary Hopkin was born on May 5, 1950.
As a child, Hopkin sang in her local chapel choir. At the age of 17 Hopkin was performing in pubs and clubs in South Waless when she appeared on the TV talent show, "Opportunity Knocks." The model Twiggy was impressed by Hopkin's performance and telephoned Paul McCartney. Twiggy recommended that McCartney sign Hopkin to the Beatles's new record label, Apple.
Hopkin recorded "Those Were the Days" which was released in September, 1968, as the first single on the new Apple label. The single hit number one on the British charts - ironically replacing "Hey Jude" by the Beatles. The song was an international hit, reaching the top position in more than 14 countries.
