Born in Germany, Max Colpet applied in 1933 for a visa to the United States but was unable to obtain one, so he lived in Paris, France. In France he met Marlene Dietrich who recorded his song "Alone in a Large City." After the war, he moved to the U.S. and became an American citizen. In 1956 he returned to Germany where he translated the musical plays "Irma La Douce" and "West Side Story" into German.
