Lion of Hollywood: The Life and Legend of Louis B. Mayer The Metro Goldwyn Mayer film studio was originally called Triangle Pictures when it was created in 1915. The studio became MGM in 1924. The most famous of Hollywood's studios is actually in Culver City, California. In 1970, corporate raider Kirk Kerkorian bought MGM and auctioned off most of the studio's assets. In 1990, the MGM movie lot in Culver City was purchased by Sony Entertainment of Japan and is currently the home of both Sony's Columbia Pictures and TriStar Pictures.
