| Mike Melvoin was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on May 10, 1937. Growing up in Milwaukee, he began playing piano when he was three and made his professional debut.
Melvoin played in jazz groups during college at Dartmouth and graduated in 1959 with a BA in English Literature.
After college, Melvoin moved to Los Angeles, California, where he became the music director for Peggy Lee, arranging and conducting the music for a series of her albums.
Melvoin has worked on hundreds of albums for artists including
Barry Manilow,
Bette Midler,
Carol Burnett,
John Lennon,
Barbra Streisand,
Quincy Jones,
Herb Alpert,
and the
The Monkees.
Melvoin was the musical arranger for all of the Partridge Family's albums and has composed scores for several films and TV shows. He served as National President of the Recording Academy in 1984 and 1985.
