| Michael Penn is the
son of director Leo Penn and
actress Eileen Ryan. In the
1980s, Michael Penn played
a small part in an episode of the TV series
"St. Elsewhere" but music was his
forte. In 1987, his brother, actor Sean Penn hosted
an episode of "Saturday Night Live" with Michael Penn
as the musical guest. In 1989, Michael released his debut
album, March, which was a critical success and
spawned a hit with "No Myth".
In the late 1990s, Michael Penn began collaborating with
Paul Thomas Anderson scoring films for
the young filmmaker including Boogie Nights. Penn
made a cameo appearance in the film as a record producer.
