| Mickey Rooney was born Joe Yule, Jr. on September 23, 1920, in Brooklyn, New York.
The child of Vaudeville performers, Rooney made his stage debut before he was two. As a child, he made a series of silent comedies. In 1932, he legally changed his name to Mickey Rooney and in 1934 he was signed to a contract by MGM.
Rooney's films in the 1930s and early 1940s made him a star. After being drafted and serving in World War II, Rooney returned to Hollywood, but did not enjoy the same success he had as a child. Nevertheless, he continued to make films and even starred in his own TV series.
