In 1959, while studying film at the University of California at Los Angeles, Hellman accepted an offer from producer Roger Corman to direct The Beast from the Haunted Cave.
Hellman worked on other films for Corman including Creature From the Haunted Sea.
In the 1960s, Hellman directed Jack Nicholson in Flight to Fury, Ride in the Whirlwind, and The Shooting.
