Oliver Norvell Hardy was born on January 18, 1892, in Harlem, Georgia. He died on August 7, 1957.
Hardy started singing as a child. As a teen, Hardy had a job running a movie theater. Interested in acting, Hardy visited the Lubin Film Company in nearby Jacksonville, Florida. Hardy worked in silent films for Lubin for several years before moving to California.
