Wolf was born on March 7, 1946, in New York, New York.
While attending the High School of Music and Art, Wolf visited the nearby Apollo Theatre and saw performances by Jackie Wilson, Otis Redding, and others. After high school, Wolf studied painting at the University of Chicago then received a grant at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts. In Boston, Wolf hosted a radio show called "The All Night House Party." Wolf played a variety of music representing his broad musical tastes.
In Boston, Wolf joined his first band which played blues. In 1967, he formed the group which became the J. Geils Band. The J. Geils Band played cluns in the New England area. The group was signed to Atlantic Records and continued touring for the next few years. Opening for the Rolling Stones, Wolf met actress Faye Dunaway at a concert. The two were later married for a short time.
The J. Geils Band released several albums, but were most popular as a touring group. The group did hit it big in the early 1980s with the song "Centerfold" but broke up soon afterwards in 1983.
