Pink Floyd was formed in the mid-1960s by guitarist Syd Barrett. The other members of the group were Roger Waters, Rick Wright, and Nick Mason. The group was named after two bluesmen, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.
The group was signed by EMI in early 1967 and had a top-20 hit with their first single, "Arnold Layne." The group's next single, "See Emily Play" hit the top 10.
Pink Floyd's first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn was released in 1967.
In 1968, guitarist, Dave Gilmour, joined the group. Syd Barrett had been showing signs of mental disability, and Gilmour was hired to cover Barrett during tours and other live performances. But within a few months Barrett was out of the group.
In spite of losing its lead guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, the group acheived incredible success.
In 1973, Pink Floyd released Dark Side of the Moon which reached number one in the US and became one of the biggest-selling albums of all time - spending more than 700 weeks on the Billboard album chart.
Pink Floyd became one of the most popular touring acts performing elaborate stage shows.
By the the 1980s, the group began to come apart. In 1986, Waters sued to dissolve the group and a Waters-less Pink Floyd released Momentary Lapse of Reason in 1987. Visitor Comments: |
