Newman was born on November 28, 1943, in Los Angeles, California.
At 17, Newman was a staff songwriter working for a publishing company. His "Just One Smile" was a hit for Gene Pitney in 1965. Other hits followed including "Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear" which was a hit in England for Alan Price in 1967.
Newman's first album, Randy Newman, was released in 1968. His second album (actually recorded first) included "Mama Told Me Not to Come" which was also recorded by Three Dog Night. Three Dog Night's version hit number one on the charts.
Newman himself charted with "Short People" in 1977. The song reached number two on the US charts.
Since 1971, Newman has composed music for more than two dozen films. He received 16 Oscar nominations before finally winning an Academy Award in 2002 for the song "If I Didn't Have You" from the film Monsters, Inc.
