Richard Harris

Richard St. John Harris was born on October 1, 1930, in Limerick, Ireland. He died on October 25, 2002.

When health problems ended his dream of a rugby career, Harris turned his interests to acting and, in 1955, left Ireland to attend the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. After graduating the academy, he attended Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop.

Harris made his film debut in 1958. In the 1960s, Harris's career took off.

Harris was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for the 1963 film This Sporting Life

In the late 1960s, Harris played the lead in the film version of Camelot. He also sang on two albums produced by his friend, Jimmy Webb. The first album included Harris's performance of Webb's "MacArthur Park" which hit number 2 on the US charts.

In the 1980s, Harris performed in "Camelot" on Broadway for five years. He followed with other performances on stage.

Harris's performance in the 1990 film The Field earned his second Oscar nomination.

Harris played Headmaster Albus Dumbledore in the 2001 film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and it's first sequel.
