Richard Perry was born on June 18, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York.
Perry attended the University of Michigan then returned to New York and wrote songs with Kenny Vance. In 1965, Perry went to work for Red Bird Records and began producing recordings.
In the late 1960s and through the 1970s, Perry produced albums by Captain Beefheart, Tiny Tim, Johnny Mathis, Harry Nilsson, Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon, Art Garfunkel, Diana Ross, Leo Sayer, and Ringo Starr.
