Richard Starkey was born on July 7, 1940, in Liverpool, England.

Starkey adopted the stage name "Ringo Starr" based on the rings he often wore and his last name, Starkey. Starr played drums for a number of Liverpool groups before he was asked to join the Beatles in 1962.
