| Elmore Rual Torn, Jr. was born on February 6, 1931, in Temple, Texas. His nickname, "Rip," was also used by his father and others in his family.
After college and a brief stint in the army, Torn studied at Lee Strasberg's famous Actors Studio. He appeared on Broadway and on television in shows such as "Playhouse 90."
Torn has appeared in over 100 films including One Trick Pony,
Cross Creek,
and Men in Black.
In 1996 he was nominated for two Emmy awards and won one for "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series" for his performance in the TV series "The Larry Sanders Show."
