Cansino started dancing professionally at age 12. When she was 17 and working in a nightclub in Hollywood, she was "discovered" and appeared as a dancer in few films. Then, as Rita Hayworth, she appeared in a number of low-budget films before co-starring with Fred Astaire in You'll Never Get Rich and You Were Never Lovelier.
Hayworth starred in My Gal Sal and Cover Girl. In 1946, she starred in Gilda.
