| Leonard Franklin Slye was born on November 5, 1911, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He died on July 6, 1998, in Apple Valley, California.
Slye moved to California when he was 18. He played and sang in musical groups including the Sons of the Pioneers who recorded "Cool Water" and "Tumbling Tumbleweeds." While a member of the Sons, Slye adopted the stage name Roy Rogers.
