| Roy Richard Scheider was born on November 10, 1932, in Orange, New Jersey.
Scheider studied acting at Rutgers University and William and Mary. After college, Scheider spent a few years in the Air Force then returned to acting. His first film roles were small parts in films such as Paper Lion.
In 1971, Scheider delivered impressive performances in Klute and The French Connection. Scheider earned an Oscar nomination for The French Connection.
In 1975, Scheider starred in Jaws - which, for a time, became the highest grossing film. Scheider receive another Oscar nomination for his performance in All That Jazz in 1979.
